Our Maryland is proud to announce Bakari Sellers and Tom Perriello will speak at our inaugural Politics & Policy Summit on Monday, December 4, in College Park.
Mr. Sellers is a nationally recognized voice for change. Born in 1984 and raised in Denmark, South Carolina, he graduated from South Carolina public schools, Moorehouse College and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He worked for U.S. Congressman James Clyburn and former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, and he was one of the youngest State Representatives and youngest black elected officials in the nation. He was named to Time Magazine’s “40 Under 40” list in 2010 and Politico’s “50 Politicos to Watch” list in 2012, and he is the voice of a new generation of American leaders.
Mr. Perriello is a former advocate, diplomat and congressman who played a key role as a champion of change in Virginia’s 2017 elections. Born and raised in Charlottesville, he has a track record of results fighting corruption, expanding economic fairness, and promoting reconciliation in conflict zones and communities back home. He has worked for peace and transitional justice in conflict zones around the world. He launched what was then seen as a long-shot bid for Congress in 2008 – and won. He supported and defended the Affordable Care Act, holding a record number of town halls across central and southside Virginia. After losing reelection, he continued the fight at the Center for American Progress, where he championed solutions on inequality, voting rights, immigration reform, sensible gun safety, women’s rights, and family leave.
